Inspiration is all around us. Hearing a quick story on the news, or seeing an older couple holding hands in the park, can all get my writer brain humming in a hurry. Just this past week I was in the emergency room at a local hospital. The things I witnessed and heard there were amazing. I quickly forgot about my pain and was furiously typing up notes on my cell phone. Inspiration, after all, is fleeting!
Having said that, I can still remember the moment my character, Victor Turov, came to life in my book, Paging Dr. Turov. I was at a bar having a drink with a friend, who happened to be a nurse practitioner. She was venting about a PITA surgeon she had to work with. But then in her very next sentence she told me how the man had recently spent the night in a patient's room. Apparently he was worried the patient would not make it through the night.
My first thought was, "OMG, who does that?" My second thought was, "I seriously need to find a doctor like that." Then the writer brain clicked in, and I realized I had the Dom for my first BDSM book. The rest, as they say, was history.
