In my book, Paging Dr. Turov, I had to learn all about what a cardiothoracic surgeon does. Talk about a sexy profession! They literally work on people's hearts and save lives. It was a no-brainer to make my Dom a surgeon, and since I live in Cleveland, the Clinic was the obvious hospital of choice for my book.
At that point all I needed to do was the research. I am lucky enough to have friends in the medical field. I know several nurses, an anesthetist, a vascular surgeon, and a SICU nurse practitioner. From them I learned all the day-to-day events that occur in a hospital, and it is fascinating to say the least!
The NP came up with the perfect meet-cute for my couple. She's the one that educated me on what the heck a pericardial effusion with tamponade was. Yah, try saying that one fast three times.
In the end I learned a lot and also had fun in the process. We've all heard the saying, "Write what you know." To me that just means research the hell out of something until you know it. Then you can write about it!
